Grants for Summer 2024
REEESNe announces its 2024 Student Internship and Research Grant competition, which helps students to fund professionalization opportunities (internships, mentorship, research, etc.) in summer 2024. To be eligible, students must typically have been enrolled at one of our member institutions as of January 2024, and/or be set to be enrolled by September 2024. Grants in most cases are awarded in the range of $1,000 to $2,500. Proposals should be for projects that are not fully covered by other grants or funding sources, and generally should not be for work for which you will receive a salary (exceptions could include taking an internship abroad that pays just enough to cover room and board, but you need a REEESNe grant to finance your international travel). Application due date extended: May 28th, 2024.
Note that non-Yale applicants will need to create login credentials before accessing the grant application through the database. Please also download the guidelines in order to see the list of essay prompts and word limits, as you may find it better to work on and save your proposal outside of the online system. Applications are due by the end of day on May 28th. The portal will remain open until 1 pm on May 29th in the event that you experience trouble submitting and need to contact our staff for assistance during working hours. You will be asked about Institutional Review Board (IRB) clearance for any proposed research involving human subjects, and, if required for your project, will need to demonstrate IRB approval from your institution before accepting funding from REEESNe.
Previous Small Grants Competitions
REEESNe’s 2023 Student Internship and Research Grant competition afforded students in the northeastern United States the opportunity to deepen REEES-related experience and skills by undertaking relevant unpaid (or underpaid) internships and research. Students must typically have been enrolled at one of our member institutions as of January 2023, and/or be set to be enrolled by September 2023, in order to qualify for this opportunity. Grants were in most cases awarded in the range of $1,000 to $2,500. Proposals should be for projects that are not fully covered by other grants or funding sources, and generally should not be for work for which you will receive a salary (exceptions could include taking an internship abroad that pays just enough to cover room and board, but you need a REEESNe grant to finance your international travel). Undergraduate and Master’s-level students receive first priority, but we may also make awards to doctoral students who propose projects relating to professions outside of the academy, if there is sufficient funding. We at all levels prioritize proposals for opportunities that emphasize professionalization and not simply academic advancement (all other merits being equal, a proposal to intern with a think tank or policy official focused on Eurasia, for instance, would receive priority over a proposal to assist a professor in policy-related research on Eurasia, while a proposal to be mentored in conducting such research by working on a professor’s project would in turn fare better than a proposal to pursue the student’s own research agenda with only loose supervision). The deadline for submission of student applications was 11:59 PM Eastern on May 24th, 2023, while the required letter of recommendation from a faculty or staff member at the student’s current academic institution was due by May 30th, 2023.
